Trump Appears To Criticize British PM Starmer While Praising King Charles

President Donald Trump appeared to criticize British Prime Minister Keir Starmer while praising King Charles, who is visiting the U.S.

Speaking at the Oval Office, Trump called the king a “great friend” and described him as “fantastic.”

“I think if he were doing that, if that were up to him, he would have probably helped us with Iran,” he then added, in an apparent reference to Starmer, whose government has refused to aid the U.S. in most aspects of the war, particularly guaranteeing passage through the Strait of Hormuz.

The king has had an eventful visit, delivering an address to Congress and a toast during a state dinner, in which he highlighted that British and American people “have fought and fallen together in defense of the values we cherish.”

He also made some historical jokes: “You recently commented, Mr. President, that if it were not for the United States, European countries would be speaking German,” Charles said during a passage of his address. “Dare I say that, if it wasn’t for us, you’d be speaking French.”

Speaking before Congress, the monarch recalled that “America’s words carry weight and meaning, as they have since independence.”

“The actions of this great nation matter even more. President Lincoln understood this so well, with his reflection in the magisterial Gettysburg Address that the world may little note what we say, but will never forget what we do,” he added.

“And so, to the United States of America, on your 250th birthday, let our two countries rededicate ourselves to each other in the selfless service of our peoples and of all the peoples of the world.”

On Wednesday, the king and Queen Camilla visited a 9/11 memorial event in downtown Manhattan, where they laid flowers and spoke with other attendees. They also took part in several other events, including a visit to 30 Rockefeller Plaza, an urban farm and a literacy event.
