Nvidia’s CEO Interacted With a Woman Accused Of Being a Chinese Spy. Congress Wants Answers.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has been asked to answer questions before Congress regarding his connection to a woman who has been accused of spying for China.
“Recent reports raise significant national security concerns regarding the PRC’s access to sensitive U.S. technology and information,” Republican lawmakers wrote to Huang in a new letter.
“The issue of PRC infiltration and access to cutting-edge U.S. technology is core to the investigative work of our three committees this Congress. It is vital that Congress determines the extent to which U.S. national security has been placed at risk,” reads a passage of the letter, signed by House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Brian Mast, Select Committee on China Chairman John Moolenaar, and House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence Chairman Rick Crawford.
Last week, the New York Times reported that U.S. intelligence found that Alice Huang was possibly working to get Nvidia AI chips to China. They also concluded that she was a Chinese intelligence asset who was funneling information to Beijing.
The outlet noted that the woman had a close relationship with Huang. In a statement to the newspaper, Nvidia stated that the woman worked for a company that was a customer of the company.
“Jensen’s interactions with Ms. Huang are not unusual or unexpected. Meetings with customers are part of a C.E.O.’s job; Jensen talks with thousands of customer executives every year,” the company said.
Nvidia noted that a company like Megaspeed does not receive any sensitive information. Rather, such a company would “receive ordinary business information — not sensitive Nvidia trade secrets — and zero information relevant to national security.”
Jensen is not accused of any wrongdoing and the report stated that there was no indication he was aware of any covert actions by the woman.
Regardless, Jensen is now being asked to appear before three congressional committees to discuss his interactions with the woman.
“We are writing to request that you appear before our committees for a joint, closed-door briefing on NVIDIA’s security protocols against foreign adversary espionage and your interactions with a publicly reported People’s Republic of China (PRC) intelligence asset: Megaspeed executive Alice Huang,” the letter stated.
He has been called to testify on November 18 and asked that he accept the date or provide an alternative session date by November 11.
