Teyana Taylor Reveals What She Learned From Iman Shumpert Divorce

Teyana Taylor isn’t a broken-hearted girl.

In fact, her divorce from former NBA star Iman Shumpert in 2023 taught her a delicate lesson about putting on a united front and setting an example for the kids.

“Divorce, to me, is you’re grieving the death of a living being,” Teyana—who shares daughters Iman, 10, and Rue, 5, with her ex—said in an interview with Vanity Fair published Jan. 13. “I think once children are involved, you understand the importance of really still having to show up for each other.”

She added, “At least for the next 18 years, and being the best co-parents that we can be.”

Teyana, 35, publicly addressed her divorce filing in November 2023, 10 months after she and The Chi star quietly filed to end their seven-year marriage. The pair’s divorce was granted in July 2024.

Despite their public breakup, the Golden Globe winner is optimistic about love, and encourages others to as well, as she explained that she doesn’t “want people to start feeling scared of marriage, because marriage is a beautiful thing.”
