Taylor Swift’s ‘Opalite’ music video is a ‘90s fashion fever dream

She comes back stronger than a ’90s trend.

Taylor Swift released her new music video for “Opalite” on Apple Music and Spotify Friday morning — and in addition to appearances from all five stars who joined her on “The Graham Norton Show” back in October (Domhnall Gleeson, Lewis Capaldi, Jodie Turner-Smith, Greta Lee and Cillian Murphy), it’s positively packed with throwback fashion moments.

Following an informercial-style intro hawking a “state-of-the-art chemical potion” called Opalite that promises better relationships with friends, lovers, co-workers and even pets, Swift’s (brunette!) character is introduced as a loner whose deepest connection is with a literal rock.

Joined by her inanimate BFF, our heroine tries her hand at a VHS aerobics workout, applies body glitter, hits a karaoke bar and (of course) makes friendship bracelets, all while modeling retro looks ranging from overalls to a neon windbreaker set.

Everything changes when Gleeson’s character — whose closest companion is a cactus — orders a bottle of Opalite and spritzes it at the exact same time as Swift, teleporting her straight to his living room and setting the stage for a beautiful new friendship.

It’s not long before the duo are posing for a campy mall photo shoot in matching denim vests, stonewashed jeans and striped sweaters and sharing pretzels in vintage crewnecks (Swift’s printed with a cartoon cat, of course) and fanny packs.

It all culminates with a rousing number at a dance competition, with the couple clad in his-and-hers tracksuits in the “Life of a Showgirl” color palette of mint green and orange.

“I had more fun than I ever imagined – Made new friends, metaphors, and fashion choices,” Swift shared on Instagram of her experience writing, directing and starring in the video.

“It was an absolute thrill to create this story and these characters.”
