Singapore: 23-Year-Old Man Arrested Within Hours Over Suspected Loan Shark Harassment Case

A 23-year-old man was arrested for his suspected involvement in a loan shark harassment case, following swift action by the police.

The authorities said that they were alerted on March 31 to an incident at a residential unit along Keat Hong Close, where loan shark-related graffiti had been scrawled on a wall. Such acts, often used to intimidate borrowers, have long been a concern in neighbourhoods affected by illegal moneylending activities.

The officers from the Jurong Police Division, Clementi Police Division, and the Police Operations Command Centre launched investigations. Through ground enquiries and the use of police camera footage, they were able to establish the identity of the suspect and arrest him within five hours of the initial report.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the man may be linked to other similar cases of loan shark harassment across the island.

He will be charged in court under the Moneylenders Act 2008. For first-time offenders, loan shark harassment carries a fine ranging from S$5,000 to S$50,000, a jail term of up to five years, and caning of up to six strokes.

The police said that they have zero tolerance for such activities, stressing that those who vandalise property, cause distress, and threaten public safety will face strict action under the law.
