Pentagon sets tight deadline for major NATO defense shift: Report

Pentagon officials told NATO allies in Europe that they must assume responsibility for the majority of the alliance’s non-nuclear defense capabilities from the U.S. by 2027, according to a Reuters report, citing five sources familiar with the discussion.

The message was relayed to diplomats at a meeting in Washington, D.C., Reuters reported, and came with a warning—that the U.S. could pull back from some of its defense coordination with NATO allies if the deadline was not met.

Some of the European officials felt the deadline was too short, per the report. The Pentagon officials were reportedly unhappy with the progress Europe has made since the outbreak of the full-scale Russia-Ukraine war.

The Trump administration wants Europe to assume much more of the responsibility for defense on its continent.
