New details emerge about Chip Kelly’s Raiders firing: ‘Botching’ playcalls
More is coming to light behind Pete Carroll’s decision to fire Chip Kelly as the Raiders’ offensive coordinator.
The Raiders made the move earlier this week and Carroll told reporters that he had given Kelly “a lot of leeway” during his short tenure calling plays in Las Vegas, but NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported on Wednesday that there was more to what had occurred.
Appearing on “The Rich Eisen Show,” the NFL insider suggested that Kelly had been messing up some of the play calls.
“There were times, I was told, where Chip Kelly was repeatedly botching the playcalls,” Pelissero said. “He’s supposed to be, for instance, tagging a motion on a play so the receiver’s on the left, not the right. He forgets to say it, so Geno Smith’s going to the line of scrimmage and going ‘this doesn’t look right.’ There’s times where Chip, I was told, on several occasions, called a play that was either not in the gameplan or not installed at all.”
The new insight would provide additional context to Carroll’s words when he spoke to reporters about his decision.
“I gave Chip a lot of leeway because he’s got an extraordinary background and history, and he had such a phenomenal season coming out of Ohio State last year, so we wanted to give him his due and all that,” Carroll said on Monday. “As we continued to grow and come together, we just couldn’t get there. So, I wish him the very best, and I like him and we got along great, but we had to make a tough call.”

Kelly lasted just 11 games in his role amid a disastrous season in Las Vegas.
The Raiders are currently 2-9 with their latest loss coming to the Browns, who were starting Shedeur Sanders for the first time in his NFL career.
