‘Iron Lung’ smokes its competition on its opener

It breathed life into the box office and smoked the competition.

“Iron Lung” was No. 1 in theaters on its opener Friday, taking in $8.9 million, according to The Numbers.

The sci-fi horror, based on a video game, is set in the post-apocalyptic future after an event dubbed “The Quiet Rapture,” causes sudden darkness.

“This deeply flawed attempt still stands as a testament to what happens when actual gamers make video game movies,” IndieWire said of the film, directed by video game developer David Szymanski.

In the second spot was “Send Help,” with $7.2 million in revenue on its opening day.

The horror comedy stars Rachel McAdams as a corporate strategist and Dylan O’Brien as her new boss who find themselves stranded on an tropical island after a plane crash.

“Melania,” the documentary on the first lady, which chronicles the 20 days prior to President Trump’s second inauguration in 2025, took third, with sales of $2.9 million.
