In the late fall of 2000, over a goose dinner in a quiet Slovak village, Ivan Ducko and his father shared stories about the changing effects of age. His father laughed that in his youth, he could drink for a week and recover overnight, but now, one evening’s indulgence required several days of rest. That conversation became the unlikely starting point for what would later become SPACElab, a house of brands company devoted to developing functional beverages built on science, precision, and purpose.

“We wanted to create something that helped the body restore itself after alcohol consumption while connecting modern science with traditional medicine,” Ducko recalls. “The goal was to make a drink that alleviated the after-effects while also supporting digestion and the liver, balancing the body.” Since dehydration can play a major role in post-alcohol fatigue, the answer was clear: it had to be a beverage.

Ducko grew up in an academic household. His mother, a vice dean at a pharmaceutical faculty, had spent decades researching beta-glucans, a compound that would later shape the company’s scientific foundation. Surrounded by doctors, pharmacists, and biochemists, Ducko and his family began experimenting with hundreds of samples. “Every formula we developed went through strict procedures and testing that were aimed to match pharmaceutical and food-industry standards,” he says.

Within a year, they had created the prototype of what would become Alcohol Killer, SPACElab’s debut beverage brand. To ensure credibility, the team sought independent validation. Early tests, Ducko notes, had proved to be promising but were limited in international recognition. So, he turned to other laboratories in the United States that specialized in toxicology. “They agreed to run controlled trials,” he recalls. “When they called with results showing our drink helped the body process alcohol faster, I was proud. It validated years of work.” Follow-up trials conducted under the same conditions confirmed similar findings, further strengthening confidence in the product’s effectiveness.

By 2005, Alcohol Killer officially launched, the culmination of four years of scientific development and refinement. Recognized for its unique formulation and rigorous testing, the drinks were designed to position SPACElab as an early player in the functional beverage category. “We’ve never been about following trends,” Ducko says. “We create trends and products that solve real problems and stand the test of time.”

As SPACElab evolved, its vision expanded beyond a single drink. Drawing on his family’s pharmacy background and influenced by holistic concepts of balance and well-being, Ducko began developing an entire portfolio of functional beverages. The company integrated beta-glucan across all its formulations, a nod to his mother’s pioneering research, and in 2016, SPACElab launched a sugar- and sweetener-free beverage in Shanghai, aiming to set new standards for clean-label innovation.

Subsequent products continued to push boundaries, with Bioactive Water 82 introducing a formulation containing a full spectrum of electrolytes (82 bioactive minerals and trace elements). Similarly, aliveR Microbiome Synbiotics reflects Ducko’s commitment to microbiome health through a multi-strain synbiotic approach. SPACElab’s latest innovation, Yodina water, a full-spectrum electrolyte beverage containing bioactive iodine, maintains SPACElab’s focus on thoughtful formulation, quality ingredients, and consistent global standards.

“We’ve always been a family company,” he notes. “That means we keep our promises, we keep our standards, and every product, whether sold in New York or Zimbabwe, has the same level of quality.”

Before the pandemic, SPACElab had been distributed across multiple countries, keeping quality and consistency at the forefront of its collections. However, it faced disruptions during COVID-19 and is now rebuilding its global presence. “We maintain the same passion, and we’re ready to expand with the right partners who share our values,” Ducko notes. Strategic participation in international trade fairs has since helped reignite global interest.

Today, SPACElab stands as a family-driven enterprise that bridges scientific rigor and entrepreneurial creativity. Ducko’s formal education and his mother’s lifelong dedication to research remain at the company’s core. Every product reflects the same founding principles that began over that family dinner: curiosity, collaboration, and a belief that our beverages can bring value to someone’s life.

Looking ahead, SPACElab continues to seek partnerships with distributors and investors who share its long-term vision.
