Grasshopper Hops Into Deal On Adam McKay-Produced Docu ‘You Need This’
EXCLUSIVE: Grasshopper Film acquired North American Non-Theatrical and Digital distribution rights to feature documentary film You Need This. Pic is from Adam McKay’s Yellow Dot, Hôtel Motion Pictures, and Scenery. Directed by Ryan Andrej Lough, the film played the global festival circuit.
In You Need This, Lough and McKay take a plunge down the rabbit hold consumer capitalism—how it dictates our values, our identities, and even our dreams. More than an economic system, consumerism has evolved into an insidious belief structure that distorts how society measures success, erodes our connections with one another, and pushes the planet toward collapse. Through conversations with economists, dream researchers, and social psychologists, the film unravels how the relentless pursuit of productivity and material wealth robs us of time—time to reflect, to connect, to dream, to simply be.
“We have found the ideal partner in Grasshopper Film,” said Lough, who feels the film “is going out into the world at what feels like exactly the right moment, especially during this time where we need to question the structures we live within, and collectively work to reimagine our paths forward.”
McKay called the docu “a provocative and acerbically satirical dive into the interrelation of our dangerously flawed social, economic, and political structures. We need to have these conversations.”
Lough and McKay produced with Cecilia Butler, Isidoor Roebers, and Tyler Owen. The executive producers are Staci Roberts-Steele, Benjamin Rednour, and Heather Mitchell.
Grasshopper’s Ryan Krivoshey negotiated the deal with Natalie Locke and Chris Perez of Donaldson Callif Perez on behalf of the filmmakers.
