[TOKYO] GE Vernova and Hitachi agreed to explore opportunities to deploy small modular nuclear reactors in South-east Asia.

The companies will study possibilities for their joint venture to introduce their BWRX-300 small modular reactor (SMR) to South-east Asian countries, according to a press statement released on Saturday (Mar 14). They signed a memorandum on Saturday at the Indo-Pacific Energy Security Ministerial and Business Forum held in Tokyo. GE Vernova and Hitachi will look at ways of cooperating with Japanese suppliers, they said in the statement.

Interest in nuclear power is rising globally as governments and technology firms seek clean, stable energy to meet rising electricity use for artificial intelligence and the boom in data centres. Proponents say SMRs can be produced in factories and assembled on site, which could make it cheaper and faster to build than a traditionally complex and expensive power plant.

There are already several projects in progress involving the BWRX-300 SMR around the world. Last year, Canadian power generator Ontario Power Generation won approval to construct the first of four SMRs designed by GE Vernova at a site outside of Toronto. The Darlington project, as it’s known, is expected to be the first SMR to be deployed in a Group of Seven country. BLOOMBERG
