Fortnite maker Epic Games cuts about 1,000 jobs across company

[NEW YORK] Epic Games is cutting more than 1,000 jobs across the company, amid a downturn in engagement with its Fortnite video game.

“We’re spending significantly more than we’re making, and we have to make major cuts to keep the company funded,” the company said in a blog post on Tuesday (Mar 24). “This layoff, together with over US$500 million of identified cost savings in contracting, marketing, and closing some open roles puts us in a more stable place.”

The company said it will offer at least four months of severance to affected employees.

This is Epic’s second major round of layoffs in three years. In September 2023, the company eliminated 830 employees for similar reasons.

Last week, Epic raised the prices of Fortnite’s in-game currency, writing in a blog post that “The cost of running Fortnite has gone up a lot and we’re raising prices to help pay the bills.” BLOOMBERG
