ERCOT issues weather alert ahead of winter weather
AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) has issued a weather watch, which begins Feb. 19 and ends Feb. 21, due to cold weather across the region, the agency said in a news release.
“ERCOT is monitoring weather conditions closely and will deploy all available tools to manage the grid, continuing a reliability-first approach to operations,” ERCOT said in the release.
Monday night was expected to be a cool night with temperatures back down into the low 50s for a majority of the area. Rain chances will start to pick up around midday on Tuesday just after midday with a few isolated showers before the next front pushes through with extremely cold air behind it, according to the KXAN First Warning Weather Team.
As a way to prepare for extreme cold weather, ERCOT said it is coordinating with the Texas Energy Reliability Council, the Public Utility Commission of Texas, the Texas Department of Emergency Management and other state agencies, the release said.
On Monday, Gov. Greg Abbott held a briefing on how the state is preparing for its response before the cold weather hits.
Although a weather watch will be issued, ERCOT said “grid conditions are expected to be normal, and there is no current expectation of an energy emergency.”
