'Devastating': Austin volunteers race to save Food Forest before I-35 construction

Volunteers at Austin’s Festival Beach Food Forest rushed to save more than 90 plants after learning a temporary wastewater line for the I‑35 expansion will cut through recently planted parkland. The community turned out in force to relocate trees, including a 40‑year‑old mountain laurel now set to be moved instead of destroyed. The nonprofit says the disruption could cost at least $500,000 and is seeking up to $1 million in compensation as construction begins Wednesday.
