Cuban President Vows Fierce Resistance to ‘Any External Aggressor’ After Trump Hinted at U.S. Invasion

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez responded to President Trump’s recent saber-rattling, saying that any attack on the island would be met with an “impregnable” resistance.

Earlier this week, Trump said, “We’ll be doing something with Cuba very soon.” And on Monday, CBS News reported that the president floated the idea of taking the island over: “Whether I free it, take it, I think I could do anything I want with it,” he said, according to the network.

Díaz-Canel Bermúdez responded to the comments on social media, saying that if Trump were to try to take the island, U.S. forces would face a tough fight.

“In the face of the worst scenario, Cuba is accompanied by a certainty: any external aggressor will clash with an impregnable resistance,” he wrote on X.

“The US publicly threatens Cuba, almost daily, with overthrowing the constitutional order by force. And it uses an outrageous pretext: the harsh limitations of the weakened economy that they have attacked and sought to isolate for more than six decades,” Díaz-Canel Bermúdez wrote, referring to U.S. economic sanctions against Cuba.

Trump’s comments about Cuba come as U.S. forces remain embroiled in Iran. That war started on February 28 and shows no signs of ending any time soon. According to The Intercept, the war in Iran is potentially costing the U.S. $2 billion a day.

Also, although only Congress can declare war under the U.S. Constitution, Trump has not sought congressional authorization for the war in Iran or for any possible military action against Cuba.

The conflict has also threatened to create a global energy crisis as oil and gas infrastructure has been attacked by Iran, and shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has been curtailed.

Despite this ongoing crisis, Trump appears increasingly interested in Cuba. “Cuba has an economy that doesn’t work and a political and governmental system that can’t fix it,” the president said to CBS News. “So they have to change dramatically. What they announced yesterday is not dramatic enough. It’s not going to fix it. So they’ve got some big decisions to make over there.”
