Chiefs’ Andy Reid Reveals Private Locker-Room Moment After Loss
The Kansas City Chiefs were eliminated from the playoffs on Sunday, Dec. 14, with a 16-13 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, and it was a crushing moment for a franchise used to nearly always going all the way.
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes was injured in the final moments of the game, to make matters worse, and the team is awaiting more information about his injury. After the game, head coach Andy Reid said the team would get an MRI on the injury on Sunday or Monday, but that “it’s didn’t look good.”
Reid also gave insight into some private moments in the locker-room after the loss. The Chiefs already had less than a 20% chance of making the postseason before the Chargers game, but now, that probability is less than 1%, according to research from the NFL.
After the game, Reid was asked about the mood in the locker room, and he was honest about how down the players were after the deflating loss.
“Guys are down, they busted their butt to win the game,” Reid said of their mood. “I wouldn’t expect anything less. So, it’s not a great feeling, I wouldn’t expect it to be after losing a game.”

The 2025-26 season marks the first time the Kansas City Chiefs haven’t gone to the postseason with Mahomes at the helm. The Chiefs drafted Mahomes in 2017 as the 10th overall pick. For his first year with the team, Mahomes was backup to quarterback Alex Smith. Then, he took on the role of franchise quarterback in 2018.
Since becoming franchise quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs, Mahomes had helped the team snag seven consecutive AFC Championship Game appearances and taken the team to the big game five times, winning three of them.

Regarding the injuries sustained in Sunday’s game, Reid offered an update on all of the players.
“As far as the injuries go, Patrick hurt his left knee,” Reid said. “We’ll get an MRI tomorrow or this evening, whenever they get him in there. And then Jaylon Moore, likewise, left knee. And then [Tyquan] Thornton, he got hit in the head. We’ll just see where he’s at — he’s in the (concussion) protocol right now.”
