Pope Leo Has A Message To America On Its 250th Anniversary. Why This Pits Vatican Against Trump Administration

Pope Leo XIV has urged the US and European nations to welcome immigrants, in an appeal coinciding with the 250th anniversary of America, and seen as a rebuke to President Donald Trump’s anti-immigration policies.

The Pope’s appeal came in a letter sent to his home country as he visited Italy’s migrant frontline island of Lampedusa.

Lampedusa is a gateway for migrants risking dangerous Mediterranean crossings into Europe from Africa.

Pope Leo also urged European nations to do more to assist arrivals, which have topped ‌7,000 this year, according to reports.

“Europe is capable of addressing the crisis in this region in a comprehensive manner, integrating immediate relief efforts into a long-term strategic plan capable of receiving, protecting, supporting and integrating migrants” while “assisting developing countries so that no one is forced to emigrate,” he said.

The Pope had slammed the US President’s hardline immigration policies earlier also by terming it as inhuman.

He said in the latest appeal that the Catholic value of defending life includes “welcoming, protecting and assisting immigrants.”

“To receive (immigrants) with compassion and generosity is not only an act of charity, but also a recognition of the dignity that belongs to every human person,” he said in the letter.

In April, Pope Leo warned against what he described as a ‘delusion of omnipotence’ among leaders pursuing conflict in the Middle East, a remark widely interpreted as a rebuke of escalating rhetoric around Iran championed by Trump.

Pope Leo XIV has also publicly pushed back at Donald Trump after the US president claimed the pontiff was effectively backing a nuclear armed Iran and ‘endangering Catholics’.

Lampedusa is located between Tunisia, Malta and Sicily and the Pope’s choice of Lampedusa also is of political significance. Pope Francis had visited Lampedusa in his first trip outside Rome after becoming pope in 2013.

According to UN Refugee Agency data cited by Reuters, 14,464 migrants have arrived in Italy by sea so far this year. More than 50 percent of them had landed in Lampedusa, which is greater than the island’s resident population of about 6,000.

More than 1,400 people have died or gone missing while ​attempting to cross ​the ⁠Mediterranean this year, according to the UN’s International Organization for Migration.

The pontiff had become a champion of immigrants since he took over as Pope in May 2025. Vatican has since been seen as adopting the support for migrants a central theme of his papacy, in direct contrast to Trump’s anti-immigration policies. In June, Pope Leo warned that history would judge harshly leaders who mistreat immigrants.

The Pope’s trip also comes just weeks after the European Union approved tougher migrants rules that enforces stricter border controls and broader detention powers.
