How The Resource Factory Chisels Artistic Vision into Sculpted Wonders, Bringing Character to Every Curve
In the creative hub of Sarasota, Florida, The Resource Factory has carved a place where imagination takes physical form. Founded by Scott Hamblin, the business began four decades ago, with Hamblin as a young artist driven by his determination to make a living from his craft. Today, the company stands as a renowned sculpture fabrication studio, working with industry giants and strengthened by the mission to turn ideas into enduring works of art through exceptional craftsmanship, creativity, and technical know-how.
Hamblin’s journey into sculptural design was born out of curiosity and grit as he began painting small signs as his first paying job fresh out of art school. Although he started to make ends meet, it eventually became the impetus for his larger purpose. “I was paid $80 and thought, ‘Okay, I can do this,'” he recalls. “Soon, those hand-painted signs started my first business creating wood-blasted signs.” Before he knew it, he found himself designing furniture out of the front end of a 1950s classic car, leading to a commission of 55 full-size classic cars.
“I was asked by an art director of a theme park if I could sculpt a well-known cartoon character. That was really the infancy of the three-dimensional world I live in today,” he shares.
His business began on the porch outside his home. However, once he was commissioned to create a wooden blasted sign, the porch was no longer an adequate size. This led him into a 1,000-square-foot facility, and then a 6,000-square-foot facility. “And here we are today, in a brand new 12,000-square-foot facility, which we fully designed ourselves, making it an immersive, creative environment,” Hamblin notes.
Over the years, The Resource Factory has established itself as a powerhouse for design, sculpting, and fabrication of custom art pieces that bring visual stories to life. Whether it’s a monumental tree sculpture for a resort or a striking centerpiece in someone’s backyard, The Resource Factory brings a blend of artistry and precision to every creation. Hamblin notes, “We approach every project with the same precision. Every member of our team brings equal expertise to craft an attention-grabbing sculpture.”
The team, Hamblin notes, encompasses a group of skilled craft people whose attention to detail defines the company’s reputation. “We always hire people who are exceptionally skilled in their area of expertise. Today, I wouldn’t want to do without any of them. They all hold a vital place in the company,” he says.
His team of artists, sculptors, painters, and fiberglass fabricators has honed its expertise over the years, with many staying with the company for decades. “Some of my sculptors and painters have been with me for over 30 years,” he adds. “We’ve all grown together through the challenges and the successes.”
That unity and experience are complemented by a rare balance between old-world artistry and new-age technology. At The Resource Factory, sculptures are crafted through a combination of hand-sculpting and advanced fabrication tools, including CNC cutting, fiberglass production molds, laser technology, water jetting, and 3D printing.
“We do fifty-fifty,” Hamblin explains. “Half old-school sculpting by hand, and half modern technology. You’ve got to stay in step with technological changes, or you’re going to fall behind.” In doing so, the company honors the tactile art of sculpture while meeting the precision required for today’s complex designs, whether it’s a chrome-plated cyborg made with fiberglass and HDU foam or a 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air sculpted with welded rolling steel structures and fiberglass production molds.
“We approach every design as a collaboration between vision and craft,” he says. “Our sculptors, painters, and metalworkers come together to create something that feels alive.”
The company’s attention to detail across projects has taken them across a wide range of industries. Their extensive portfolio encompasses sculptures for major theme parks and entertainment companies, luxury hotels and resorts, as well as commission-based work for private clients. “We get some really unique projects,” he says. “We recently fabricated a 12-foot-long water faucet in a family home in Orlando; it’s unbelievable.” Hamblin hopes to expand more deeply into the resort and hotel sector, building on recent large-scale works that have redefined spaces through immersive, sculptural design.
For Hamblin, art and fabrication have always been his calling. “I don’t just sit behind a desk,” he says. “I enjoy being part of the creative process with our team on the work floor and in the field, this is what I was born to do!” After more than 45 years, The Resource Factory continues to evolve, building sculptures and crafting immersive experiences that can transform environments and connect people to creativity and imagination. And that, in essence, is what The Resource Factory has always been about: bringing art to life, one creation at a time.
