Israel Reportedly Preparing For The Possibility That Iran War Will Resume Soon
Israel is preparing for the possibility that the war in Iran will resume soon, according to a new report.
“The Americans understand that negotiations with Iran are going nowhere,” a senior official told local outlet Channel 12.
“We are preparing for days to weeks of [renewed] fighting and waiting for Trump’s final decision. We will know more in 24 hours,” the official added.
At the same time, the country will extend the ceasefire with Lebanon by 45 days following the latest round of talks with Beirut in the U.S.
State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott said the conversations were “highly-productive” and the ceasefire will continue to “enable further progress.”
On May 14 and 15, the United States hosted two days of highly-productive talks between Israel and Lebanon. He went on to say that the “State Department will reconvene the political track of negotiations on June 2 and June 3.”
“In addition, a security track will be launched at the Pentagon on May 29 with military delegations from both countries. We hope these discussions will advance lasting peace between the two countries, full recognition of each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and establishing genuine security along their shared border,” he concluded.
The future of the situation in Iran is unclear as negotiations continue at a standstill and the Strait of Hormuz blocked by both Tehran and Washington.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the country is “trying to maintain” the ceasefire to “give diplomacy a chance.”
Speaking at a press conference in New Delhi during the ongoing BRICS summit, Araghchi went on to say that the country’s lack of trust in the U.S. is the “main obstacle to any diplomatic effort.”
“Every day brings a different message, sometimes even two different messages in a single day, which deepens mistrust,” the official added.
Araghchi also said in a video message that Iran “was the victor in this war” as the country is now seen as capable of “confronting the world’s greatest powers.”
President Donald Trump, in turn, said the U.S. controls the Strait of Hormuz because the country “wiped out their armed forces, essentially.”
Speaking to reporters on Air Force One on his return from China, Trump said “we had a little month-long ceasefire, I guess you’d call it, but we have a blockade that’s so effective, that’s why we did the ceasefire.”
Trump also said in China that Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping offered him help to strike a deal with Iran and would “like to see the Hormuz Strait open” as the stalemate between the two countries continues.
“President Xi would like to see a deal made. He would, he would like to see a deal made. And he did offer. He said, ‘If I can be of any help at all, I would like to be of help,'” Trump told Fox News’ Sean Hannity in a taped interview on Thursday.
