Brooklyn Coachworks: Restoring More Than a Machine
In an age where automotive choices are abundant, true distinction has become increasingly rare. Car enthusiasts are searching for something with character, with presence, and a story that cannot be replicated at scale. Founded in 2018 by Daniel Marcello, Brooklyn Coachworks was built for such an audience.
Growing interest in 4×4 vehicles in the United States is being driven by a broader cultural shift toward outdoor recreation and adventure, with the market projected to expand at a steady pace of around 7.5 percent annually through 2034. At the same time, consumer engagement continues to deepen, with strong participation across demographics and rising enthusiasm among buyers signaling sustained demand for vehicles that combine capability with lifestyle appeal.
According to Marcello, Brooklyn Coachworks has established itself as the benchmark in high-end restoration of Land Rover Defenders. Its work centers on restoring Defender 90, 110, and 130 models, reimagining them as elevated versions of what they were always meant to be.
“Defenders carry a sense of presence and refinement with them,” says Marcello. “This allows them to move comfortably between vastly different settings, from open, unpaved landscapes to the formality of a black tie evening in New York City. Still, the classic Land Rover Defenders are less common in the United States, compared to other parts of the world.”
Marcello says his restoration philosophy is rooted in his own lived experiences driving these vehicles around the world. “I have lived with these vehicles in the harshest conditions from Africa, Australia, Europe, and throughout the Americas,” he says. “That experience tells you what really matters when fully restoring these Defenders. You build differently when you understand that. We are not in this business to sell clients a poorly built Defender on giant tires, a worn-out chassis, or a gaudy interior presented as an authentic Land Rover Defender, but rather a purpose-built, fully restored Defender that you can enjoy driving daily. We are building what it should have been from the start.”
According to Marcello, what defines a fully restored vehicle is the depth of restoration. He emphasizes how nearly every component they replace or reengineer consists of new components and parts. All Brooklyn Coachworks Defenders get a brand-new galvanized chassis, new body panels, and carefully sourced materials like genuinely sourced Italian leather, to ensure that the finished product is fundamentally renewed.
“A restoration should not be a surface exercise,” Marcello explains. “If you are doing it properly, you are rebuilding the entire foundation, not just what people can see.”
Brooklyn Coachworks operates across three locations with workshops in Brooklyn, New York, Virginia, and Italy, creating a global footprint that supports both craftsmanship and continuity. “Our workshops are not just assembly lines. They are environments where skilled specialists approach each build as a singular undertaking,” Marcello says.
Brooklyn Coachworks prides itself on its pace of work. “While normal industry timelines often extend to a year or more, we complete each build within six to eight months. We work closely together to deliver consistency without compromise,” Marcello notes.
He believes that the experience of restoration extends far beyond the workshop floor. “We guide our clients through a comprehensive process including the customization, restoration, registration, and delivery of the finished vehicle to their homes,” Marcello says.
The clientele, he mentions, are individuals with a clear sense of taste who value design, craftsmanship, and heritage. Marcello believes that for them, these vehicles are an expression of identity. “I know each of my clients personally,” he adds. “This is not a handoff business. It is a relationship built on trust and long-term commitment.”

According to Marcello, Brooklyn Coachworks offers something increasingly rare: time, attention, and a clear point of view. “Land Rover Defenders represent a kind of freedom and uniqueness,” Marcello says. “They can take you anywhere in style and class, and that is what people connect with. It is not about where you go every day. It is about knowing you can go anywhere.”
The business exclusively builds a limited number of 20 to 25 Defenders per year, according to Marcello. This, he adds, is a conscious choice to ensure the craftsmanship and quality of every vehicle. He says, “This only works because every build matters to our clients and to us.”
