CBS News cuts 6% of workers, citing changes in the industry

[NEW YORK] Paramount Skydance’s CBS News cut 6 per cent of its workforce on Friday (Mar 20) as it seeks to adapt to changes in the news industry.

CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss and president Tom Cibrowski said that the affected employees would be informed by the end of the day, according to an internal memo reviewed by Bloomberg.

“New audiences are burgeoning in new places, and we are pressing forward with ambitious plans to grow and invest so that we can be there for them,” they wrote. “That means some parts of our newsroom must get smaller to make room for the things we must build to remain competitive.”

The New York Post reported that the cuts could impact roughly 60 employees.

Weiss took over CBS News in October after Paramount acquired her media startup the Free Press. Since stepping in, she has made multiple changes at the news network, including naming a new nightly news anchor.

Recently, she made a controversial decision to delay a 60 Minutes segment that focused on the deportation of migrants to a foreign prison after promos for the episode had already aired. CBS News eventually broadcast the episode with few changes made. BLOOMBERG
