Dog’s reaction as he’s driven home for the first time ever melts hearts
In a viral Instagram video, a dog owner caught their pup’s reaction to riding home for the first time, and internet users are obsessed with it.
The heartwarming clip shared in January by @bowietheblackdoggie shows the pup, Bowie from Amsterdam, the Netherlands, smiling at his owner with his tongue sticking out as he rides a car for the first time to his new forever home.
“POV [point of view]: you’re driving home for the first time in your whole life,” the caption says. “Bowie’s first car ride ever: from the beautiful breeder farm in Friesland all the way to her forever home in Amsterdam. Everyone in the car was smiling all the way.”

British animal charity Battersea Dogs & Cats Home explains that a new environment full of unfamiliar scents, people and routines can be challenging, which is why easing them in gradually is important. This early stage is when trust begins to form, so focusing on comfort rather than expecting too much is essential.
Limiting visitors at the start gives them time to understand their surroundings and bond with their new household without pressure.
Providing a retreat of their own helps them manage this transition. Whether it’s a covered crate or a soft bed set in a quiet corner, it should be a private spot stocked with necessities like water. The rest of the household needs to respect this area, as it’s meant to help them relax rather than serve as any form of discipline.
House rules should be established immediately, as breaking habits later is harder. Keeping certain rooms closed or using gates can help guide behavior safely.
Above all, every dog adapts differently. Some settle in quickly, while others need more time alone before seeking interaction. Allowing them to adjust at their own speed helps them gain confidence naturally.
