Saint Bernard has “separation anxiety,” how owner says goodbye explains why
In a viral video, a dog owner revealed the reason why her Saint Bernard might have separation anxiety, and internet users can’t cope with it.
The heartwarming Instagram clip shared on Sunday under the username @wynniethesaintbernard shows the poster and her dog’s “goodbye routine.” This consists in the pup lying on top of the owner while sitting on the floor, getting petted in the belly and abdomen before leaving.
“If I ever ask why my dog has separation anxiety, show me this video,” the poster writes in the caption, as she keeps petting the canine.
Langford Vets says that dogs often enjoy constant company, which can make spending time alone challenging. To help them adapt, owners are encouraged to introduce solo time slowly and weave it into everyday routines.
This can begin with brief periods in another room, even when someone is still in the house. Providing enrichment items, such as food‑filled toys or sniff‑based activities, can help keep them settled during these moments.
Short outings without the dog, like quick errands or exercise trips, can also build confidence. Keeping mealtimes, walks, and rest periods predictable supports this process and helps dogs learn to relax independently.
More sensitive dogs and young puppies may need a gentler approach in order to truly thrive. Creating a cozy, secure area for them—where they can feel safe and comfortable—is essential.
Owners can reward calm behavior in their bed, then gradually introduce distance by stepping away while offering them a distraction, like a treat or a toy.
Over time, this can progress to briefly closing a door or using a barrier, then extending the duration. Once the canine is comfortable being alone inside the home, owners can slowly start short absences outside.
Because every dog responds differently, it is important to watch for signs of worry and move more slowly if needed.
Signs of separation anxiety in dogs, include destructive behavior (chewing, digging), persistent barking/howling, indoor urination/defecation, excessive drooling, and panting, typically occurring shortly after departure.
Some pups may also appear clingy or restless as owners prepare to leave, and display extreme excitement upon return.
The video so far received almost 10,000 views and nearly 500 likes on the platform.
