Mary Carillo Will Step In For Savannah Guthrie For NBC’s Olympics Opening Ceremony Coverage

Mary Carillo will step in for Savannah Guthrie during NBC’s coverage of the opening ceremonies of the Winter Olympics in Milan on Friday.

Carillo will join Terry Gannon as host of the coverage. Ahmed Fareed, who was already scheduled to serve as a daytime host, will now host Olympic Late Night on February 7 to 9. The opening ceremony coverage will start at 2 p.m. on Friday, with primetime coverage at 8 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock.

Guthrie will no longer travel to Milan as authorities search for her mother, Nancy, who went missing over the weekend from her home in Tucson, AZ. The sheriff of Pima County has said that he believes that Nancy Guthrie was taken against her will.

Craig Melvin, Guthrie’s co-host on Today, also will remain in the United States. He was scheduled to host Olympic Late Night from Feb. 7-9.

Molly Solomon, executive producer and president, NBC Olympics Production, said in a statement, “Our hearts go out to Savannah and the entire Guthrie family. They continue to have our full support.”

Carillo has hosted three closing ceremonies: Salt Lake City in 2002, Beijing in 2008 and Rio in 2016. This is her 17th Olympic assignment and 14th with NBCUniversal. She also will cover the games as a sports desk reporter.

Fareed will be on his sixth Olympics assignment, and will depart Milan on Feb. 9 to travel to Los Angeles for NBC Sports‘ NBA All-Star Weekend coverage. Maria Taylor will host Olympic Late Night after her work at the Super Bowl on Sunday.
