Vikings’ JJ McCarthy given crushing injury prediction by sports doctor
The Minnesota Vikings secured a 16–13 victory over the New York Giants on Sunday, but they were led by backup quarterback Max Brosmer for the entire second half after second-year starter J.J. McCarthy exited the game with a hand injury.
McCarthy has been plagued by injuries since being selected in the first round by Minnesota last season. He missed his entire rookie year and has already dealt with an ankle injury, a concussion, and now a hand injury this season.
Shortly after he left the game, a concerning prediction emerged regarding what the prognosis could be for the former Michigan Wolverines star.
According to Pro Football Doc David J. Chao, who reviewed the play, there is significant concern that McCarthy may have suffered a right metacarpal fracture — an injury that would likely require surgery and could end his season.
“The video is he follows through and hits a defenders helmet. The worry is for a metacarpal fracture. Hope not, look that would mean surgery. he would miss time and really the end of the season with not much time. Hopefully it’s a minor injury, but the worry is a metacarpal fracture on the throwing hand of JJ McCarthy.”

If McCarthy is unable to play in the Vikings’ final two games, Max Brosmer would finish the season as the starter. It would be yet another unfortunate setback for McCarthy, who has struggled to consistently stay on the field early in his career.
Through two seasons, McCarthy has made just nine total starts and holds a 5–4 record during that span, which remains one of the positives to take away from what he has shown so far.
This season, McCarthy entered Sunday completing 56.8% of his passes for 1,342 yards, with 11 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, while adding 154 rushing yards and three scores on the ground. He threw his 12th interception of the season against the Giants before exiting the game.
