Canal+ Takes ‘The Couple Next Door’ Around Europe
The Couple Next Door are on the move. The popular UK drama series has been snagged by Canal+ for a raft of European countries, as part of a wider deal for a package of shows from Beta Film.
Starring Sam Heughan and produced by Eagle Eye in association with Beta Film, The Couple Next Door was a hit for Channel 4 on linear TV and catch-up. Loosely adapted from the Dutch series The Neighbors by Millstreet Films, the show was written by David Allison (Marcella) and directed by Dries Vos (Professor T). The show was produced for Channel 4 in the UK and went out on Starz in North America and Lionsgate+ in Latin America.
Pay-TV outfit Canal+ has picked up the show for Austria, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Belgium, and the Netherlands. It acquired the drama from Beta Film alongside other scripted offerings including tax-fraud drama Other People’s Money, which was produced by Tom Tykwer’s X Filme and bowed in the Panorama section at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year.
Other titles in the package include a trio of Italian dramas: Mafia series Cold Summer, starring Alessio Boni (Leopardi); coming of age show Prisma; and Makari – Sicilian Mysteries, which is based on the bestselling books by Gaetano Savatteri. The package was rounded out with Spanish series Gangs Of Madrid, and Scandi drama Last to Brake.
Beta closed the package deal with Canal+ ahead of the London Screenings, where it will have a slate for buyers alongside the other big international distributors.
