Jennifer Garner To Star In & Produce Netflix Comedy ‘One Attempt Remaining’ From Kay Cannon
EXCLUSIVE: Jennifer Garner is expanding her slate with Netflix, having signed on to star in and produce One Attempt Remaining, a new comedy from director Kay Cannon (Blockers).
The film follows an ex-couple who, years after their acrimonious divorce, learn that the cryptocurrency they won on a crazy night on a cruise is now worth millions… but they’ve forgotten the password. With only three days left before the account expires, they must retrace their steps that night, not just to find the password to their fortune, but also why they fell in love in the first place.
Written by Joe Boothe & Alexa Alemanni and Cannon, pic originated as a spec from longtime collaborators Boothe and Alemanni, marking the third original feature they’ve set up this year, with projects already at Sony and Black Label.
Shawn Levy and Dan Levine will produce for 21 Laps, alongside Nicole King for Linden Productions, and Garner. Exec producers include Cannon, 21 Laps’ Becca Edelman, Deanna Barillari, and Bergen Swanson.
In recent years, Garner has been a go-to star for Netflix, with the success of the family comedies Family Switch (produced by Linden Productions) and Yes Day. The latter garnered the streamer’s biggest Kids & Family film launch to date. She also starred opposite Ryan Reynolds in The Adam Project, a sci-fi pic marking another outing with 21 Laps, which is Netflix’s fifth most popular movie of all time with 157.6M views.
Garner is coming off of success with The Last Thing He Told Me, Apple’s hit series adaptation of the New York Times bestseller by Laura Dave. She exec produces and stars in the series, which will soon expand with a second season after launching as a limited series. She’ll next be seen starring in the Peacock series The Five-Star Weekend, on which she’s an EP. She is repped by Linden Entertainment, CAA, and attorneys Jason Sloane and Harris Hartman of Sloane, Offer, Weber & Dern.
Cannon is an Emmy-nominated writer, director, and producer best known for creating the Pitch Perfect franchise. She made her directorial debut with the hit Universal comedy Blockers, starring John Cena, and has also written and directed a modern reimagining of Cinderella starring Camila Cabello for Sony and Amazon. On the television side, she worked on 30 Rock for six seasons, earning multiple Emmy nominations, Writers Guild Awards, and a Peabody Award. She also served as a co-executive producer on New Girl and created the Netflix series Girlboss. Most recently, she directed the pilot of Don’t Get High for Hulu and 20th. She is repped by WME, 3 Arts Entertainment, and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller.
