‘EPiC: Elvis Presley In Concert’ Teaser: Baz Luhrmann Locks In Rare Footage Of The King’s Vegas Era

Baz Luhrmann knows a thing or three about the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. Now we’re getting the first official look at the Oscar-nominated Elvis filmmaker’s documentary EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert. Watch it above.

EPiC features long-lost footage from Elvis Presley’s legendary if sometimes maligned Vegas residency in the 1970s. It’s woven together with rare 16mm footage from the 1972 concert film Elvis on Tour and treasured 8mm film from the Graceland archive, along with rediscovered recordings of The King telling “his side of the story.”

The trailer opens with the ominous tones on Also sprach Zarathustra and an image of a Presley nervously twirling his ring and tapping his foot. “In 1969, Elvis returned to the stage to begin a legendary residency in Las Vegas,” the screen reads. “For 40 years, there have been rumors of lost footage. … It was found.”

“There has always been talk amongst Elvis’ fans, both longtime fans and newer fans brought in by our film Elvis, of missing reels and never-before-seen concert footage,” Luhrmann told Deadline early this year.. “During the making of Elvis, from very early on in my process I had the privilege to access the studio’s vaults deep in the salt mines of Kansas, where troves of old film negatives are stored. We were astonished by the sheer volume of unused footage from Elvis: That’s the Way It Is, the film of Elvis’ legendary 1970 Summer Festival in Las Vegas – all shot on anamorphic 35mm – and also from Elvis’ road concert film from two years later, Elvis on Tour.

Neon and Universal Pictures Content Group acquired EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert in October and will release it for a weeklong exclusive Imax run on February 20 before it hits theaters worldwide a week later.
