This Basic Cardigan Is So Perfect I Buy it in a New Color Every Winter
For several winters now, the vast majority of my looks have had one garment in common: the best-selling knit cardigan from Sézane. More specifically—because this French firm is one of the best places to buy knitwear and has several iconic cardigans—I’m referring to the Emile model, a very thick knit design with a round neck and slight balloon sleeve. It would be more accurate to write cardigans, plural, as I decided to invest in a new color each year since noticing how often I wore my first Emile cardigan. And, yes, so far, I’ve kept my promise.
My love affair with the Emile cardigan from Sézane began like the epic romances in great romantic comedies—purely by chance. I was looking for a cardigan in a very specific color, and Google led me to the website of this brand, which also has stores throughout the US. Although it’s a bit more expensive than I would have liked—it retails for $170—a recommendation from a friend who owned one, and the fact that it was a wardrobe staple, gave me the push I needed.
I loved how it fit me from the first time I tried it on—it runs a little large—but I never imagined all the things I’d pair it with. It seems designed to be worn with jeans and a basic t-shirt, but I definitely wear it a lot with dresses and even dress pants, replacing the blazer, when I want to dress a bit more casually. That being said, its versatility isn’t the main reason I always recommend this cardigan: it’s the quality. I’ve honestly lost count of how many times I’ve washed my cardigan but it’s still like new.
This cardigan is part of the French brand’s basics collection, so it’s available every season in a color palette that changes over time. However, shades like red, camel, navy, and pink are always in stock, unless they sell out, which happens far more often than you might think. It seems I’m not the only one who has made this Sézane knit jacket one of her winter essentials. Do you understand now why I have so many in my wardrobe? And the best part is, there are always more to come…
